We traveled to Yax (Yash..) short for Yaxoquintela, yesterday. It is a special, beautiful place, where a lot of this ministry began. The winding mountain road there is filled with stunning views. Pastor Pablo was born and raised here, and received much of his vision, motivation, English language, etc. from the missionaries who lived here in the early days of bringing rhe gospel to the Indians of Chiapas. There was the Jungle Camp here, where missionaries trained to live in the jungle, to ride horses, carry supplies in canoes, how to live with the Indians, learn their languages, etc. Fascinating history. Pablo and his dad are filled with stories. We visited family, especially Santiago, Pablos brother, who has resisted dealing with his diabetes and now suffers the severe consequences. We met the new daughter in law of Pablos brother. The wedding was last week. The groom is 19. The bride just turned 16. It is the way here. We visited the church there that Janet (the lady who was born here, now lives in Holland, and I just visited) built, and the youth camp buildings where hundreds of young people gather for camp and conferences and sports, etc.
it is a peaceful, quaint, picturesque place. There are only dirt roads and paths, mountains around. There are corrals and open land with horses and cows. And a river with current, rapids, but places to swim too. Cell phones dont work here. The land where the youth camp now resides was once an airstrip, where all supplies to the missionaries had to be flown in. It was quite a sight in those days when small supply planes , 5 at a time, would appear on the horizon, carrying pilots in trainingfrom Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. They practiced their takeoffs and landings on the short grass airstrip, and provided much entertainment to the locals
I have written of Yax before...but here Here are a few more photos...
