As we land, so many thoughts......
the people : proud, beautiful, grateful
the land: green, lush, mountainous
the extremes: mountains, highlands, lowland jungle
the opportunities: health care, cross cultural experience, spiritual growth,
adventure
the history: ancient Mayan, agriculture
leaving home...
It is bumpy, flying over those mountains and dropping down into the valley to land. But the peace and excitement is palpable. It is 10:00 at night, and there are 2 people in the airport...one to check people in (one long line), and one to check customs. (typical Mexican process...) Jan and the drivers know to wait patiently outside the doors. 7 HEAVY bags of stuff provoke the green light and go through without a hitch. Doreen, unfortunately, pulls a red light, meaning that her 2 HEAVY bags must be opened and examined, repacked and stamped. Picture that....
The road from Tuxtla to Ocosingo is curvy, mountainous, 3 hours long. It is dark, but Humberto knows the roads and is a good driver. We talk, eat pan y agua, and doze, arriving at our destination, the grounds of the Bible School, at about 1:30 AM. The night is clear, the moon brilliant. We are staying in a dorm type apartment on the 2nd floor. We drag the HEAVY bags up the steep, pitched stairs, and each claim a bed. There are small wooden tables and straight backed wooden chairs. There is an INSIDE toilet! The thought of this off balanced gray haired lady going down those stairs at night to find a bano... is not a good thought. A chamber pot comes to mind.... We scramble to find pajamas, a sheet, our toothbrushes, we fall on top of our airmattresses, and pass out.
Coming home....
